Dear Senator Hutchison:

Americans of Ukrainian descent in Houston, are calling for your help in the struggle for democracy and respect of human rights in Europe.

In freezing weather, overnight, in Kyiv the capital of Ukraine, a crowd of 200,000 people have put up tents on Independence Square in support of Viktor Yushchenko and the right to fair and democratic elections. Many local and international organizations have accused the government of massive election fraud, which took place in the presidential run-off on November 21st 2004. In many other cities including Kyiv, city councils have officially declared Viktor Yushchenko the new president - defying the election authorities, who say Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych won.

President George Bush’s senior observer of the November 21st run-off election in Ukraine, Senator Richard Lugar “noted that the campaign had already been marked by widespread political intimidation and failure to give equal coverage to candidates in the media. Physical intimidation of voters and illegal use of governmental administrative and legal authorities had been evident and pervasive.” Senator Richard Lugar in his press conference advised Ukrainians to take serious action to make the authorities publish what he argued were the true results of Sunday's runoff.

Observers for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) declared Sunday's election fell far short of European democratic norms. Bruce George, head of the OSCE mission in Kiev told a news conference that the Ukrainian authorities "did not respond in a positive manner" to election. Jane Cordy the head of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly said at a news conference that the monitors' conclusions "will be a disappointment to the international community”

German Foreign Minister Fischer also expressed grave concerned about serious failings in the presidential election in Ukraine. International election observers have been working in the Ukraine for a number of months and their independent polling has put the challenger Viktor Yushchenko ahead of the current Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.

Best Regards
