65 years since Battle of Brody
Our Neighbors The Ukrainians

Sixty-five years ago on July 19, 1944, a military unit of young Ukrainian patriots, later to become the 1st Ukrainian Division of the Ukrainian National Army, who followed the credo of the Ukrainian national anthem we shall lay down our soul and body for our freedom, faced an overwhelming force of Soviet Army soldiers poised to capture the west Ukrainian city of Lviv.

The tragedy of this battle, in the vicinity of a provincial city of Brody, some 65 miles northeast of Lviv, lasting only a few days, was not only the loss of life at the battlefield (estimates vary from 3,000 to 6,000 young Ukrainians, most of them well-educated), but also the fact that the unit had to face Soviet divisions that included many Ukrainians, forcibly drafted and sent into the battle without proper arms and training. Additionally, the Russian communists and democrats unleashed a massive p ropaganda of slander of the Ukrainians who fought for their freedom and of the very idea of the aspiration to independence of Ukraine. When one considers the amount and the ferocity of the propaganda, it appears that approximately 200 surviving old veterans of this division in Ukraine are more dangerous to the Russian Federation than the Ukrainian Armed Forces or even NATO.

The commemoration of anniversary of the Battle of Brody by patriotic Ukrainians throughout the world included, at the minimum, a requiem service in the churches or at the memorial markers. This year there was no service here. My wife and I commemorated the fallen heroes, which include relatives and older school friends, with a silent prayer. May their souls rest in peace.
